Nude man at Shevlin Park detained after scuffle with deputies
Two callers reporting a suspicious, naked man at Shevlin Park west of Bend Sunday morning brought Deschutes County sheriff’s deputies to the scene. The 20-year-old man was taken into custody after he tried to assault one of the deputies, they said.
A 911 dispatcher got the first of two calls around 8:50 a.m. from a Bend woman jogging in the area, said Sgt. Dan Bilyeu.
The woman said she’d asked the man if he was okay, and he began cursing her and threatened to kill her, Bilyeu said, adding that the woman was able to leave the area and said she never felt her safety was in danger.
About 25 minutes later, 911 got a second call from another woman at the park, reporting a man in the Fremont Meadow area she described as “fully nude, yelling and babbling,” the deputy said.
Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the area after the initial call and were checking the area at the time of the second call.
Deputies found the man, later identified as Schuyler Stephen Werner of Bend, near Fremont Meadow, Bilyeu said.
When they tried to contact Werner, he became aggressive, charged one of the deputies and tried to assault him, the sergeant said. Deputies took Werner to the ground, where he was handcuffed and detained.
There were no injuries during the incident.
Bend Fire Department medics responded to treat Werner and assess his condition. He later was taken by ambulance to St. Charles Bend for further evaluation.
Bilyeu said it was not clear if Werner’s behavior was due to a medical condition or substance abuse, but the incident remained under investigation.
After release from the hospital, Bilyeu said, Werner will face misdemeanor charges of attempted assault on a public safety officer, resisting arrest and second-degree disorderly conduct.
