Redmond man, 83, killed in Highway 20-Cooley Rd. crash
An 83-year-old Redmond man was killed and two people seriously injured Wednesday night when he failed to stop at a stop sign on Bend’s north end and his car was struck by a pickup and a car, Oregon State Police reported.
Troopers said Albert J. Haslebacher died at the scene of the crash, which occurred just before 11 p.m. at the intersection of Highway 20 and Cooley Road, prompting a lengthy investigation that closed the intersection for several hours overnight.
Troopers said Haslebacher’s 2004 Subaru Legacy was heading west on Cooley Road when he failed to stop for the stop sign at the intersection. The Subaru was struck by a 2007 Dodge pickup and a 2008 Toyota Prius.
Both occupants of the Prius were taken to St. Charles Bend with serious injuries, troopers said. Five people in the Dodge pickup were treated by Bend Fire medics on scene but declined transport to a hospital.
OSP was assisted at the scene by the Bend Police Department, the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office, Bend Fire and Rescue and the Oregon Department of Transportation.
OSP said more information would be released when it’s available.
During the closure, westbound motorists were being diverted onto Robal Road and eastbound drivers onto the Old Bend-Redmond Highway as medics worked at the scene and the investigation began.
The highway intersection reopened nearly five hours after the crash, around 3:45 a.m., said ODOT spokesman Peter Murphy.
