SMART at the Library is also an opportunity for us to recruit volunteers for the 2015-2016 program year. Come to your local Library and find out more about what it takes to be a volunteer for SMART in your local schools. It only requires one hour a week, it’s fun and it’s of great benefit to the kids.
Bring your friends, bring your children, bring your grandchildren and join us for an entertaining afternoon of volunteer recruitment and artistic fun.Our goal for this event is to:
Enlist more SMART volunteers to read with children in local schools (It only takes one hour a week!)
Create some book-inspired art that can beentered intoour SMART Art contest and displayed at our fall fundraiser.
We will provide all the materials. All you need is a love of reading and some time to relax and channel your inner artist. Art pieces submitted by children ages 3-18 will be eligible for prizes at our fundraiser in the fall.
Can’t make it to SMART at the Library? No problem. About SMART® (Start Making A Reader Today) SMART, Start Making A Reader Today, is a statewide nonprofit organization that envisions an Oregon where every child can read and is empowered to succeed. We partner with schools around the state and engage community volunteers to read one-on-one with PreK-Third grade children, helping to strengthen literacy skills and encourage a love of reading.
Over the past two decades, SMART has steadily grown to become Oregon’s largest volunteer literacy program. Children in the program receive 14 new books throughout the school year to keep and read with their families. Together, with support from communities and schools around the state, SMART is improving the reading capacity of Oregon’s children.
