Crews tackle new wildfire north of Maupin
Crews worked Saturday to finish containing a human-caused wildfire that broke out Friday evening and burned more than 900 acres southeast of Dufur and north of Maupin.
As of late Saturday, the Oak Canyon Fire was 60 percent contained at 930 acres as it burned in light grasses, brush and some juniper on private lands, according to the Central Oregon Interagency Dispatch Center in Prineville.
Two 20-person crews were working the fire, in addition to five rappellers, six engines, four helicoptersand two Single Engine Air Tankers (SEAT planes).
Aerial resources supported the crews on the ground, in addition to helping to keep the fire out of the Deschutes River basin.
The fire was ignited about 6 p.m. Friday, officials said.
Elsewhere in the region, fire crews and law enforcement officials extinguished three unauthorized campfires on Saturday.
