Two men charged in SE Bend burglary spree

KTVZ

Two Bend men have been charged with burglary, and one of them jailed on additional charges in connection with a string of break-ins and other crimes at five southeast Bend businesses late Thursday and early Friday, police said Saturday evening.

The first burglary was reported shortly before 11 p.m. Thursday, when police responded to a burglar alarm at Mutual Materials, a business at 631 Southeast Woodland Avenue, said Lt. Nick Parker.

Officers found a glass door had been broken and money was taken. A search of the business and surrounding areas turned up no suspects.

Around 5:30 a.m. Friday, an officer was dispatched to the Coffee and Snack Factory coffee stand at 610 Southeast Ninth Street on a report of an overnight burglary. The officer found a broken window and evidence of a break-in.

About three hours later, a Bend officer responded to Automotive Solutions at 740 Southeast Ninth Street on a reported theft of gas sometime during the night. The officer found fuel had been siphoned from several cars parking in the parking lot of the business, Parker said.

Minutes later, an officer was sent to 915 Southeast Armour Road on a report that two businesses, Vintage Rollers and Recording Studio, had been burglarized overnight. The officer found damage to both businesses, including a broken glass door.

Parker said investigating officers were able to identify Dan Michael Hughes, 28, of Bend, and transient Larry Edward Clark, 22, as the two suspects in the burglaries through video surveillance and other methods.

Officers found Hughes around 1:45 p.m. Friday near Highway 97 and Cooley Road. He was issued a citation to appear in court in lieu of custody on a second-degree burglary charge. Parker said the Deschutes County District Attorney’s Office will consider other related charges.

Clark was found Saturday around 4:25 p.m. at 740 Southeast Ninth Street, Parker said. He was taken to the Deschutes County Jail and booked on several charges, including four counts of second-degree burglary, five counts of third-degree theft and two counts of second-degree criminal mischief.

Clark was held without bail for parole violation, Parker said, because he was found to be out of compliance with his sex offender registry and possessed a restricted weapon, brass knuckles.

As the investigation continues, anyone with information to assist or who has yet to report a possibly related crime in the area was asked to contact Bend police at 541-693-6911.
