Vitolins appointed to state public safety training board

Crook County District Attorney Daina Vitolins has been nominated by Governor Kate Brown to serve on the Board on Public Safety Standards and Training (BPSST.)

The Oregon Senate will review all new nominations for approval later this month.
The governor appoints 24 members to BPSST. Members are appointed from a variety of disciplines – chiefs of police, fire chiefs, sheriffs, corrections, district attorneys, and several other areas. The term of office is three years and a member can serve only two consecutive terms.

Vitolins is excited by the challenge of becoming a BPSST board member.

“Diversity, racial profiling, and technology are major issues that law enforcement in
Oregon will be facing over the next few years. I believe that the BPSST board is uniquely situated to lead Oregon law enforcement on these important issues. I would like to be part of policy making and reviewing training and employment standards which will restore faith in law enforcement in the areas of race relationships and technology,” said Vitolins.

Mike McCabe, Crook County Judge, is happy to see Vitolins recognized for what she
would bring to the BPSST board. “Daina will add a lot to the board because, law
enforcement-wise, she’s both tough and fair. And I believe it’s very important to have representation from Central and Eastern Oregon on the BPSST board.”

The District Attorney for Crook County since 2008, Vitolins is originally from Boise,
Idaho. She holds a B.A. in Political Science from the College of Idaho and is married to Rory O’Neill, who works for the Oregon Department of Justice.
