COCC responds to shootings; candlelight vigil Friday

Central Oregon Community College said Thursday it “is committed to the safety of its students, faculty and staff and has increased security on its campuses for the remainder of the day in the wake of events at Umpqua Community College. “

“There have been no threats directed at any COCC students, faculty or staff at any of the campuses,” a statement said..

“Our hearts go out to the students, our colleagues, and their families affected by this event at Umpqua Community College,” said COCC President Shirley Metcalf.

COCC also said it “has been proactive in taking preparedness steps, including an active shooter drill that was conducted with local law enforcement last year.The college community has been asked to be vigilant and report any suspicious happenings to Campus Public Safety.”

While the full impact of UCC’s tragic shootings are not yet known, Central Oregon Community College and its student government will be hosting a candlelight vigil to honor the victims of this tragic event at 5 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 2, in Wille Hall at the Coats Campus Center on the Bend Campus.College and community members are invited to attend.
