Green light for Reed Market after biz struggles, detours
A week earlier than scheduled, city of Bend officials cut a ribbon across Reed Market Road to celebrate Tuesday’s reopening of the key east-west thoroughfare, more than two years after construction began.
Construction managers and business owners also were on hand for the occasion , the latter perhaps being the most excited by the project’s completion.
“The coffee hut in our parking lot couldn’t make it, and every business that I’ve talked to along this strip has had a tough time,” said Expressway owner Tom Healy.
The project cost more than $18 million and was completed in several phases. A roundabout was added, new lanes with concrete surfaces, and a new bridge crossing on American Lane.
Healy decided to also host his own celebration at his market and gas station. In addition to cake, customers had the opportunity to purchase gas for $1.99 a gallon for three hours.
“Coming out of the recession, we never really caught back up. So again, this will be great, having the road reopen,” Healy said.
Nearby neighbor Malia Ward said the hassle was worth it.
“It’s been frustrating — taking detours here and there, but we’re really appreciative, and I think Bend should be very grateful for everything they’ve done,” Ward said.
Although the road is open in both directions, there’s still work to be done. Crews will continue to work on medians, sidewalks and landscaping.
Traffic lights and pedestrian crossings signals also are not turned on yet.
