Governor leading Oregon trade mission to Asia

Gov. Kate Brown leads an Oregon delegation to Asia starting Monday to promote Oregon tourism, businesses, and food products in Japan, China and Vietnam.

“Trade missions abroad can drive jobs and economic growth here at home,” Brown said. “From manufacturing, agriculture, and even to tourism, Asian markets are worth billions to Oregon’s communities. It’s important to maintain these relationships and build new ones.”

The governor will lead a delegation of about 50 public and private sector leaders, including representatives from Business Oregon, the Oregon Department of Agriculture, Travel Oregon and the Port of Portland.

The governor and the delegation will visit Tokyo, Beijing, and Hanoi during the nine-day mission. The delegation has seven business development meetings and will meet with U.S. ambassadors in each country.

Asian trade and tourism are critical drivers to Oregon jobs and our economy, the governor’s office noted.

Asia is the largest trade partner region for Oregon agriculture products. Japan is Oregon’s single-largest foreign investor. China is Oregon’s largest export market at $4 billion annually and its No. 1 overseas market for tourism. Vietnam’s growing economy provides new opportunities for Oregon food exports.
