Injured driver charged with DUII in Old Bend-Redmond Hwy. crash

A 40-year-old Redmond man had to be cut out of the wreckage of his pickup truck after it crashed into an embankment and overturned along the Old Bend-Redmond Highway Saturday night. He was taken to the hospital and cited on drunk and reckless driving charges, authorities said.

Deschutes County sheriff’s deputies and Bend and Redmond fire medics were dispatched around 8:40 p.m. to the single-vehicle crash on the Old Bend-Redmond Highway near Journey Drive, said sheriff’s Sgt. Aaron Harding. Initial reports were the vehicle was off the road on its side and the driver was trapped.

Deputies determined the driver of the 2004 Chevy Silverado, Shawn Hallin, was heading north on the highway when it left the east shoulder of the road and struck an embankment, causing it to roll onto its side, Harding said.

Citizens were able to contact Hallin but could not remove him from the pickup, the sergeant said. The fire officials who responded had to cut the top off the pickup to remove Hallin, who was taken by ambulance to St. Charles Bend.

An air ambulance was called out, but it was determined it was not needed, Harding said, adding that the driver was wearing his seat belt.

Hallin was charged by citation with DUII-alcohol and reckless driving. He was admitted to the hospital in fair condition, according to a nursing supervisor.

The crash and investigation closed the Old Bend-Redmond Highway for about two hours. Oregon State Police also assisted during the incident, Harding said.
