Snow prompts changes in two Bend Thanksgiving Day events
Due to the frigid temps and heavy accumulation of snow, I Like Pie will operate on a very limited basis with only the food drive for NeighborImpact, pie contest, pie feed, and 2k walk/slog loop as options.
The course will NOT be clear of snow and ice so footing will be treacherous, officials said. Snowshoes or traction devices are strongly encouraged, if you choose to walk.
Donations for NeighborImpact (food, cash, and check) will be accepted at FootZone through November 29th. T-shirts ordered before the Nov. 18th deadline are available for pick up at FootZone starting Wednesday (11/25).
Meanwhile, the Ninth Annual Bend Thanksgiving Classic will be modified this year due to the recent storm that brought snow and icy conditions to Central Oregon on Tuesday .
Boys & Girls Clubs of Bend is scheduled to host the Bend Thanksgiving Classic on Thanksgiving morning in the Old Mill District, which benefits the Girls on the Run program.
Due to Tuesday ‘s snowfall and the continuing freezing temperatures, the event will be modified. The safety of participants, volunteers, and staff is of the utmost importance, thus the 5k and 10k race will not be hosted on Thanksgiving morning.
Derek Beauvais, executive director of Boys & Girls Clubs of Bend, commented, “It’s unfortunate that Mother-Nature has thrown a snowball at us, but the safety of everyone involved is our highest priority. We will still host a celebration and folks are encouraged to go snowshoeing around the Deschutes River Trail and join us for hot refreshments and pie afterwards.”
The Bend Thanksgiving Classic will now be a warm indoor celebration offering coffee, hot chocolate, cookies and pie. The indoor celebration will be held at the White House, directly behind the Les Schwab Amphitheatre at 344 SW Shevlin Hixon Drive from 9:00-11:00am on Thursday, November 26 th .
All are welcome to join in celebration of the Girls on the Run program. For those who have not yet registered but would like to support Girls on the Run, there will be a suggested $10 donation.
Folks are invited to bring snowshoes or cross-country skis to get outside and enjoy a beautiful morning in the Old Mill District.
