Revamped Crescent Lake Guard station proposed for rental

KTVZ

The Crescent Ranger District is seeking comment on a proposal to turn the Crescent Lake Guard Station into a recreation rental.

Built in the early 1930s, the Crescent Lake Guard Station is a one-bedroom, one-bath cabin located on the eastern shore of Crescent Lake in Klamath County and managed by the Crescent Ranger District on the Deschutes National Forest.

The guard station will initially be available as a public rental from April/May through October. A proposed fee of $120 per night will make it comparable to similar rentals in the area.

The 670-square-foot guard station has been restored over the last several years from $100,000 of grant funding and work from Youth Conservation Corps, Heritage & Facilities personnel, and district recreation.

These restoration measures include: complete foundation replacement, exterior painting and siding maintenance, roof replacement, furnishing purchases, and upgrades to the restroom, heating and kitchen facilities.

The guard station features indoor and outdoor amenities. A full kitchen has cabinets, counters, a sink, stove, refrigerator, and a dining table. The living room features an original buffet, desk, gas heater and a couch that folds out to a bed. The bedroom contains a full bed and a dresser. The restroom has a newly installed claw foot tub with shower, a toilet and pedestal sink.

The cabin’s exterior features a picnic table, an elevated fire grill, a horseshoe pit and amazing views of Crescent Lake and several peaks in the Cascade Mountains.

Due to the popularity of Crescent Lake and the demand for this type of recreational rental, it is estimated that the initial booking season of six months would generate between $8,000 and $12,000 annually, assuming a 60 percent occupancy rate.

Comments on the proposal should be sent to Robert Gentry at rgentry@fs.fed.us or by calling 541-433-3205.
