Fire rips through Tumalo-area manufactured home
A fire tore through a manufactured home in the Tumalo area Wednesday afternoon, despite the efforts of Redmond and Bend fire crews, but the resident awakened to the smoke and made it out just in time (though without one of his boots, officials said.
Firefighters were called around 1:20 p.m. to the home at 21195 Gift Road, west of Highway 97 and north of Tumalo Road, said Redmond Fire Marshal Traci Cooper.
They arrived to find the fire burning in the front of the home and spreading quickly. The lone resident said he’d escaped through a sliding glass door.
Cooper said the cause of the fire was undetermined. Losses were estimated at $80,000 to the structure and more than $10,000 worth of contents. The American Red Cross disaster action team was called in to provide emergency assistance to the resident.
The home apparently did not have working smoke alarms, officials said. Cooper called it a good reminder for everyone to have working smoke alarms inside and outside the sleeping areas of your homes.
“We recommend that smoke alarms be replaced every seven to 10 years,” Cooper said. “Test them at least once a month, dust them to keep the sensors clean and make sure they have working batteries.
The fire was just north of the line that separates the Bend and Redmond fire response districts. Bend Fire sent two engines and a tender to the scene, with other assistance from the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office, Oregon State Police, Red Cross and Central Electric Cooperative.
