Hundreds take the Polar Plunge in Bend

We still have one more month of winter to go, but that didn’t stop hundreds of people from plunging into the chilly Deschutes River Saturday during this year’s Polar Plunge for Special Olympics Oregon.

FIve cities in Oregon are taking part, but Bend is where it all began, back in 2007.

“Today’s a great day — we always look forward to this day,” said Deschutes County Sheriff Shane Nelson. “This is all about the athletes, and the community that comes out here to support the athletes, and all of the plungers.”

This year, the water was a brisk 34 degrees, but that didn’t stop participants from plunging in. The event is so popular, it’s now the largest single fundraiser for the nonprofit.

“I can’t think of a better cause,” Nelson said. “Those athletes work so hard, and they compete so hard, and I’m so proud of them. And I’m just proud of everyone who comes out here to support the cause.”

To participate, plungers must raise a minimum of $50 in pledges. They can take a dip solo, or with a group. There’s also a costume contest.

“We’re great supporters of the cause of Special Olympics Oregon, and each year our small family group raise about $2,000, and then we come here and we enjoy the plunge,” said Rob Poirier, dressed as Fred Flintstone.

Bend Police Officer Kecia Weaver said it’s not about how far you get into the water. It’s all about bringing people together for a great cause.

“We just try to be as brave as the Special Olympics athletes, because they’re very brave in their competitions,” Weaver said.

This year, almost $60,000 will be donated to Special Olypics Oregon.
