Redmond speeding dispute: Gun brandished, 2 arrests

KTVZ

A dispute over drivers speeding up and down a southwest Redmond street Sunday evening led to a fight, the brandishing of a handgun and the arrest of a Klamath Falls man, police said. He was found at a home raided by police who also arrested a Redmond man on charges of being a felon in possession of a rifle and short-barreled shotgun.

Shortly after 6 p.m., Redmond police, Deschutes County sheriff’s deputies and Oregon State Police responded to the 2800 block of Southwest Pumice Avenue on reports of a neighborhood dispute over vehicles speeding up and down the street, said Lt. Jesse Petersen.

A physical altercation took place during the dispute and a suspect, later identified as Logan Jansen, 23, of Klamath Falls, pointed a handgun at someone before retreating into a house at 2812 SW Pumice Avenue, Petersen said.

Officers surrounded the home and were able to detain six people there, including Jansen, who was taken to the Deschutes County Jail on charges of unlawful use of a weapon and menacing. He remained lodged Monday morning, held on $15,000 bail.

Petersen said officers applied for and were granted search warrants for the home, where they found the handgun suspected to have been used by Jansen.

During the search of the home, police also found a short-barreled shotgun and a rifle, and investigators said information they gathered led them to believe it had been in the possession of Mathew Morkert, 23, of Redmond.

Morkert later was found at the Remington Arms Mobile Home Park, at 1515 Southwest Fir Avenue, No. 18, and taken to jail on a probation violation charge, as well as two counts of felon in possession of a firearm and unlawful possession of a short-barreled firearm. He was held without bail on the probation violation charge.

“The Redmond Police Department is committed to making Redmond the safest community in Oregon,” Petersen said in a news release.

“If you witness a traffic violation or offense take place, please do not take action yourself, unless it is a life-threatening situation. Instead, contact the Redmond Police Department for non-emergency and non-life-threatening situations by calling dispatch at (541) 693-6911. If the traffic offense is life-threatening in nature, please call 911.”

Redmond police also thanks the sheriff’s office and OSP for their help in the investigation.
