DA launches online case portal in OSP crime lab probe
Deschutes County District Attorney John Hummel said Friday he has launched an online portal that provides the public with access to DA files related to his review of cases worked on by former Oregon State Police crime lab analyst Nika Larsen.
Larsen is currently under investigation for her alleged involvement in the tampering of drug evidence that was at the crime lab to be analyzed, Hummel said.
“Integrity and transparency should be hallmarks of our justice system,” Hummel said . “The launch of this web portal allows the public to have the information necessary to make an informed decision as to whether I’m properly balancing the equally important goals of holding offenders accountable and ensuring that innocent suspects are exonerated.”
Hummel said he has reviewed hundreds of cases potentially impacted by the involvement of Larsen. Over the next few months, he will review hundreds more.
To date, the DA said he “has recommended that most convictions stand, although he is seeking to set aside six.”
The online portal will be updated as new cases are reviewed, Hummel said.
