A Santa Clara, California man was killed and two Klamath Falls men were injured Sunday night when one car slid into the oncoming lane of icy Highway 97 near Chemult and collided with another car, Oregon State Police reported.

On March 6 , 2016 at about 8 p.m., OSP troopers and medics responded to the reported two-vehicle collision on the highway near milepost 204, two miles south of Chemult in northern Klamath County, said OSP Lt. Bill Fugate.

Preliminary information indicated a 1998 Honda Civic was heading north when the driver, identified as Michael McKain, 49, lost control on the icy road, Fugate said.

McKain’s car crossed over the center line and collided with a southbound 1994 Mitsubishi 3000GT.

The Honda came to rest along the southbound shoulder of the highway and the Mitsubishi came to rest blocking both lanes of travel.

McKain was declared dead at the scene, Fugate said.

The driver of the Mitsubishi, Justin R. Guy, 22, and his passenger, Allen Reeves, 21, both from Klamath Falls, were taken to Sky Lakes Medical Center in Klamath Falls for treatment non-life-threatening injuries, the lieutenant said.

The highway was closed for about 3 1/2 hours for the crash investigation.

OSP was assisted on scene by the Oregon Department of Transportation and Chemult EMS.

OSP is seeking the public’s assistance, if they witnessed the crash, to contact Senior Trooper Creed Cummings at 503-583-5073 .
