Dead animals in field on northeast Redmond farm

Several dead animals can be seen on a private farm in northeast Redmond. According to one neighbor, the pile of carcasses has been there for days.

Paula Harris said Tuesday she has lived near the farm for 10 years. In the past, she’s seen the farm rehabilitate animals. But last week, as she was walking her dog, she saw a pile of what looked like pieces of animals.

She said she and her husband returned to take a couple of photos with a zoom lens.

“Possibility a horse or a cow. The others, maybe look like a sheep or goats,” Harris said. “This is appalling. It really is.”.

Harris said the photos showing animals walking around the dead animals were a heartbreaking sight, and that it could potentially pose a health risk to the ones still living.

Harris said that even if nothing was done illegally, just leaving them there was wrong.

“If they were, you know, butchered for food … there’s still a better way to handle the remains,” Harris said.

Harris said she doesn’t want any trouble, she just wants it taken care of.

Attempts by NewsChannel 21 to contact the property owners were unsuccessful.

John Griley of Deschutes County Code Enforcement team said there doesn’t appear to be an open case on this property. Griley mentioned that Oregon Revised Statutes 601.140 states no carcass may be within half a mile of a residence without burying or destroying it.

Under that statute, carcasses of domestic animals are required to be buried no more than 15 hours after death.
