Man, woman shot on Warm Springs Reservation; suspect in custody
A man and woman were found shot several times and seriously wounded Wednesday morning at a home on the Warm Springs Indian Reservation and police have arrested a 24-year-old woman who was found lying on the ground by a rifle near the home, the FBI said.
Warm Springs police received a report around 8:45 a.m. of a double-shooting at a home on the reservation, said FBI spokeswoman Beth Anne Steel.
One of the victims, a 34-year-old woman, was flown by AirLink helicopter to St. Charles Bend and was in critical condition late Wednesday afternoon, Steele said. The other victim, a 35-year-old man, was taken by ambulance to the Bend hospital and was listed in serious condition, she said.
No names have been released, but Steele said the woman is a tribal member and the man is not.
About 100 yards from the home, responding officers found a 24-year-old woman lying on the ground next to a rifle, Steele said. She was taken into custody, and Steele said she would be lodged later Wednesday at the Warm Springs Correctional facility, after questioning by the FBI and Warm Springs police.
Two other adults also were in the home at the time of the shooting but were unhurt, the FBI spokeswoman said, adding that “the suspect is related to at least some of those were in the home at the time of the shooting.”
The suspect likely will be taken to Portland on Thursday for an initial appearance before a federal magistrate. Until formal charges are filed, the FBI will not release the woman’s name, Steele said.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Scott Kerin will be prosecuting the case.
St. Charles Madras was placed under lockdown for about 20 minutes Wednesday morning due to the shooting. The lockdown was lifted shortly after 10 a.m. after police said a suspect was in custody, the St. Charles Health System said on its Facebook page.
“A person has been arrested in connection with the shooting at Warm Springs earlier this morning, and local law enforcement has confirmed it is safe to lift the lockdown,” the statement said.
During the lockdown, patients, families and staff could only enter or exit the hospital through the Emergency Department entrance.
