8-year-old Bend snowboarder hits the big time

KTVZ

As Bend 8-year-old Sicily Billelo straps in for a day on the mountain, she prepares to reach the next level of her big snowboarding adventure. For the second year in a row, Sicily is headed to Copper Mountain, Colorado to compete in the USASA National Snowboard Championships.

And her mom Nikki couldn’t be more proud.

“I’m very proud of her, and I’m very excited to see her passionate about what it is that she want to do,” Nikki said at Mt. Bachelor over the weekend. “So it’s great to see her trying hard and continuing to get better.”

Sicily spends her time practicing with her friends and coach at the Mt. Bachelor Sports Education Foundation, where they learn new tricks to expand their range of skills.

“Fear is just another reason to try it, and you never want to try it you always want to do it,” Sicily said. “You always want to commit that you can do it. And practice always helps.”

Although Nikki is excited for Sicily to go back to Colorado, she mostly loves being able to enjoy a nice, sunny powder day with her daughter.

“I think the best feeling in the world is being able to ride down our favorite runs with our son and our daughter next to me, even challenging me. And that’s success,” she said.
