Two Stayton residents died after their car crossed the center line of Highway 22 and collided head-on with a semi truck late Monday night, Oregon State Police reported.

Shortly before midnight, OSP troopers and medics responded to the reported crash on Highway 22 near milepost 20, just east of Stayton in Marion County, said OSP Capt. Bill Fugate.

A preliminary investigation found that a 1993 Honda Accord driven by Oscar Carrillo, 48, was heading west on the highway when it crossed the center line and struck an oncoming 2007 Peterbilt tractor and box trailer head-on, Fugate said.

Carrillo was pronounced dead at the scene, Fugate said. His passenger, Cecila Estrada 33, was critically injured and flown to an area hospital, but died en route, troopers said.

The truck driver, James Erickson, 48, of Crooked River Ranch received minor injuries, Fugate said.

The crash and investigation closed Highway 22 for over six hours, with a detour established on Old Mehama Road.

OSP was assisted by Stayton Police, Stayton Fire and the Oregon Department of Transportation. Fugate said more information would be released as it becomes available.
