Deschutes Public Library expands meeting-space access

As Deschutes County’s population grows, so does the demand for open and accessible meeting and event spaces. In response to this burgeoning need, Deschutes Public Library recently revised its meeting room policy to provide even greater access for both public and private events.

Kevin Barclay, Assistant Director of Public Services for Deschutes Public Library, says addressing the need for gathering spaces is just one way in which the library achieves its mission. “Libraries are still about books,” he says, “but we are also a gathering space and a cultural center. By offering this expanded service we hope to provide exciting opportunities for our new and existing library customers.”

The Deschutes Public Library System consists of six libraries: Downtown Bend Library, East Bend Library, La Pine Library, Redmond Library, Sisters Library and Sunriver Library. Meeting and tutor rooms in these libraries can be reserved online using the library’s website (www.deschuteslibrary.org/services/meeting-rooms). The website details each room’s maximum occupancy and amenities.

Barclay says there are a few rules and procedures for the public to be aware of when booking a room. Rooms can be booked up to 90 days in advance, and if the reserving person or group plans on charging admission, selling goods or serving food and drink there will be a non-refundable fee. Some of the meeting rooms are available after-hours. Alcoholic beverages are not permitted in any of the rooms. A comprehensive Meeting Room Policy can be found on the library’s website.
