Tumalo carport fire prompts safety reminder
A Tumalo homeowner knocked down a fire in an attached carport before firefighters arrived Friday night. Officials said Saturday the fire’s likely cause is a good safety reminder about keeping any light fixture away from anything that can burn.
Crews responded just before 9 p.m. Friday to the reported structure fire in the 21000 block of Robin Avenue, said a release from Capt. Brian Boyd and Fire Inspector Steve Stenkamp.
They arrived to find a fire in an attached carport that had been knocked down by the homeowner, Boyd said. Crews fully extinguished the fire and ensured there was no extension into the home.
Officials said the homeowner had just installed storage shelving in the area, and the fire’s most likely cause was an exterior light fixture that was too close to the stored material.
Losses were estimated at $15,000 to the structure, $5,000 to contents and $3,000 in damage to a vehicle. A total of 16 personnel responded to the blaze, including automatic aid provided by Redmond Fire.
The Bend Fire Department officials want to remind the community to keep lamps, light fixtures and light bulbs away from anything that might burn, including furniture, bedding, curtains, clothing and flammable or combustible gases and liquids.
