Bend animal abuse suspect arrested in Dutch Bros holdup

A 20-year-old Bend man, arrested in early July on charges he kicked and punched his dog, has been arrested again, now accused of the armed holdup of a Dutch Bros coffee drive-thru in southeast Bend later that month, police said Monday.

Police responded shortly after 11 p.m. on July 23 to the reported armed robbery at the Dutch Bros at Southeast Third Street and Wilson Avenue, said Sgt. Eric Hagan.

The 19-year-old woman working at the drive-up coffee stand said a slender white male wearing a mask and sunglasses pointed a gun at her, demanded money and ran away with an undisclosed amount of cash.

Over the ensuing weeks, police followed leads and obtained “other valuable evidence,” Hagan said in a news release. More evidence was obtained when a search warrant was executed, he added.

Tyler Jacob Speas was arrested on Sept. 3 on charges of second-degree robbery and theft, menacing and unlawful use of a weapon.

Speas made news in early July when he was arrested in La Pine after two witnesses said they saw him kick and punch a dog in a southeast Bend parking lot. His dog was seized under a search warrant to be checked by a vet and found to have several injuries.

Speas, who denied hitting his dog with a closed fist, was released on his own recognizance after that arrest.

Speas is due in Judge Randy Miller’s court on Tuesday afternoon for arraignment on the burglary, theft and robbery indictment and to enter a plea on the animal abuse charges.
