A fire that broke out in a shop northeast of Redmond spread quickly and heavily damaged an adjacent manufactured home Saturday afternoon, but a passing family who spotted the blaze alerted residents napping inside, authorities said. Crews arrived to find a 30-by-60-foot shop with living quarters on fire and the flames engulfing part of a double-wide manufactured home just five feet away, Wood said.
The fire also sparked a quarter-acre brushfire before being stopped by Redmond firefighters assisted by crews from Bend, Crooked River Ranch and Cloverdale, as well as the Central Oregon Interagency Dispatch Center.
Redmond Fire Marshal Traci Cooper said four people were napping in the mobile home when a family driving down O’Neil Way saw smoke, then flames coming from the shop.. They quickly knocked on the door to alert the four residents napping inside at the time, and they evacuated without injury No one was in the shop’s living quarters she said.
The cause of the fire was under investigation. Cooper said the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office also assisted at the scene.
Disaster responders with the American Red Cross Cascades Region were called to the scene Saturday evening to help the six adults and two children affected by the fire.
They provided resources to help address the immediate basic needs of those affected such as temporary housing, food, clothing, comfort kits, and information about recovery services.
