Hurricane relief efforts are underway
Hurricane Matthew began to strike the Florida coast early Friday morning. The Category 4 storm is leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.
“It’s just this one, it’s unlike any we’ve seen before,” Mark Major, a long-time Florida resident, told NewsChannel 21 Thursday evening.
Red Cross volunteers and Bend residents David Morman and his wife are in Florida, helping at a middle and elementary school that have been turned into shelters.
“I think between the two shelters we must be getting close to 1,200 people. I think we have about between 500 and 600 hundred at each,” Morman said.
The storm is expected to affect 19 million people.
