Pierce: Trump remarks ‘degrading,’ ‘deeply disturbing’
Oregon Republican gubernatorial candidate Bud Pierce — who’s had his own controversy over recent comments on sexual assault — weighed in on Donald Trump’s newly revealed remarks about women Saturday, calling them “degrading” and “deeply disturbing.”
Pierce issued this statement “following the release of a video which featured shocking comments on women” from the Republican nominee:
“Mr. Trump’s comments are degrading, unbecoming, and unacceptable period. As an individual, I find his comments deeply disturbing.
” In my life, I have always treated women with equality and respect, as demonstrated by my 35 year marriage, and my treatment of women as partners in our medical practice, and as valuable employees.
“As governor, I will be committed to improving the lives of Oregon’s women by initiating new and innovative programs to help with domestic violence, pay inequality, unaffordable child care, poverty in women of color, and all areas where Oregon’s women face discrimination and unfairness.”
A few days ago, Pierce released an apology video after controversial comments he made at a Portland debate about domestic violence and women during a recent debate.
The debate with Governor Kate Brown took a turn when Pierce said that successful women aren’t as susceptible to domestic abuse and sexual violence as those on lower economic rungs.
Since then, he has sent a written apology while his spokeswoman has stepped down.
On Friday night, state Rep. Knute Buehler, R-Bend, also expressed dismay at the latest revelations of remarks by Trump and went even further, urging national Republican leaders to replace him as the party’s presidential nominee.
Here’s his full statement:
“The latest revelations about Donald Trump are disgusting and deeply offensive. There is no excuse for his language and behavior. Trump is a disgrace to the Republican Party and to our democracy.
“Last year, I condemned Donald Trump because I felt he was a sexist, narcissist and intolerant of people of color and ethnic minorities. The past year he has proven himself all that and more.
“It’s time for national Republican leaders to take action to replace Donald Trump as the nominee of the Republican Party.
“In the meantime, I will continue to lead with an open mind, a tolerant heart and a thoughtful voice. And I’ll put principle ahead of political party.” Buehler concluded.
