Three teens charged in rash of SW Redmond car break-ins

Three teens were arrested early Saturday, accused of illegally entering or breaking into more than 20 cars in southwest Redmond, after residents called twice to report incidents, police said Sunday night.

Shortly before 6 a.m. Saturday, officers responded to the 1400 block of Southwest 33 rd Street on a report of two people breaking into vehicles, said Lt. Jesse Petersen. Officers searched the area but were unable to find the suspects, he said.

Around 6:35 a.m., officers were called to the area of Southwest 31 st Street and Obsidian Lane on another report of two people breaking into cars, Petersen said.

Less than five minutes later, officers found Jason McCain, 18, of Eagle Point; Treveon Nakano, 19, of Portland, and a 17-year-old male juvenile from Redmond in the area of 31 st Street and Pumice Avenue, the lieutenant said.

Most of the targeted cars were unlocked, though they forced entry into a few of them, Petersen said. Officers also located stolen property in their possession.

McCain and Nakano were taken to the Deschutes County Jail in Bend and lodged on 10 counts each of unlawful entry into a motor vehicle, as well as single counts of second- and third-degree theft. Each was held on $56,000 bail, Petersen said.

The 17-year-old was taken to the county’s Juvenile Detention Center on the same charges as the adults, well as Oxycodone possession.

Petersen said Redmond Police have property they believe belongs to victims of other vehicle break-ins and are asking community members to check their vehicles to see if they have been victims of theft. “At the Redmond Police Department, we strive to build long-lasting relationships with our community members to make Redmond the safest community in Oregon,” Petersen wrote. “One method to prevent crime is to educate prevention techniques to the public. In an attempt to prevent people living in, and visiting our community from being victims of vehicle break-ins we have three safety tips we would like to share:

Tip #1- Lock and secure your vehicles. Please lock your vehicle, roll all windows up, and make sure there is no access to the inside of your vehicle.

Tip #2- Remove and/or secure all valuable items from your vehicle. Please don’t leave valuable items in plain view. If you can’t take your property from your vehicle, then keep all valuable items locked, secured, and out of plain view within your vehicle.

Tip #3- Leave your vehicle in an open, well-lit location.”
