Oregon State Police troopers cited a 29-year-old Sandy man Saturday evening for allegedly trying to buy a snowmobile on Craigslist with marijuana.

Troopers said Monday they cited Jason Owen on charges of adult possession and delivery of marijuana and a misdemeanor charge of driving with a suspended license.

Preliminary information indicates that earlier in the week, Owen had contacted the owner of a snowmobile on Craigslist and asked if the owner would consider a pound of marijuana as trade for the snowmobile .

The owner of the snowmobile happened to be an OSP trooper out of the Salem Area Command, who immediately notified his supervisor, who in turn suggested a consultation with the OSP Drug Enforcement Section.

On Saturday, the trooper agreed to meet Owen and discuss the trade at the Pilot gas station in Brooks, Oregon, troopers said.

An unmarked police vehicle observed the suspect driving around in the parking lot. Several marked patrol cars then initiated a traffic stop.

Upon contact, the trooper identified himself and explained that Owen was committing a crime.

Troopers said Owen was in possession of 1 1/2 pounds of marijuana in his vehicle. Owen’s vehicle was impounded due to his suspended driving status and he was cited and released on scene.

A 26-year-old female passenger was not charged during the incident, troopers said

In Oregon, it’s legal for adults 21 and older to possess and use recreational marijuana, but there are limits. All sales and purchases must be made through an OLCC retailer or an Oregon Health Authority-registered medical marijuana dispensary.
