Bend police ID victim in fatal pedestrian-car crash

Bend police on Monday identified a pedestrian who was struck and fatally injured by a vehicle while crossing Southeast Third Street in Bend Saturday evening.

After notifying family members, Lt. Clint Burleigh identified the victim as Nathan Scott Bernhardt, 38, of Bend, who died at St. Charles Bend shortly after the crash.

The collision remains under investigation, Burleigh said, as more information is being gathered. No more new information was released.

Officers responded around 7:40 p.m. Saturday to the reported collision that had occurred just north of Pinebrook Boulevard, said Bend Police Corporal Bob Jones.

The initial investigation determined the pedestrian was crossing Third Street at Pinebrook Boulevard and was wearing dark clothing, Jones said.

The pedestrian was struck by a Subaru hatchback heading north on Third Street, he said, The driver, identified as Cesar Eligio, 19, of Bend, was not injured and is cooperating with the investigation, Jones added.

Bernhardt was taken by Bend Fire and Rescue ambulance to St. Charles Bend, where he later was pronounced dead, Jones said.

Members of the Bend Police Department Traffic Team responded to conduct a crash reconstruction, Jones said. The investigation closed Third Street in both directions for six hours.

The road was closed by barricades, with yellow police tape lining the roadway., during that time Traffic was detoured onto the Bend Parkway to get around the scene.
