Springfield teen arrested on sex-related crimes

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. (AP) — A Springfield teen once named “student of the year” has been arrested again, this time accused of sex-related crimes against a former classmate.

The Register-Guard says (http://bit.ly/2fsdYHZ) 18-year-old Joel Craig was arrested on Thursday on investigation of sex abuse and other charges. He was booked into Lane County Jail.

Craig was arrested in June but released without charges following an investigation into alleged weapons in his car parked on school property.

According to a search warrant affidavit filed in September by Springfield police detectives, a 16-year-old girl told police that Craig forced her to touch him and sexually abused her.

Craig was a volunteer for the Lane County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue team prior to the incident. He also was chosen as the 2016 “student of the year” by the Elks Lodge.
