A 38-year-old transient was arrested late Friday afternoon on charges he stabbed his father in the neck in the parking lot of Larkspur Park and the Bend Senior Center, police said.

Officers were dispatched shortly after 4 p.m. to a residence at 61520 Southeast Rockway Terrace, said Sgt. Juli-Ann McConkey.

Officers arrived to find Rodney Unverzagt, 63, of Bend, with an apparent stab wound to his neck, she said. They learned the incident occurred at the Bend Senior Center parking lot and the suspect, his son, Ryan Unverzagt, was outstanding.

Officers responding to the area found the victim’s son at Admiral Way and Rockway Terrace, McConkey said. He was taken into custody and brought to the Bend Police Department – where officers say he tried to run, but was caught without incident.

A Bend Fire Department ambulance took Rodney Unverzagt to St. Charles Bend, where he was treated and released, according to a house supervisor.

Ryan Unverzagt was booked into the Deschutes County Jail on charges of first-degree assault, unlawful use of a weapon and third-degree escape. His bail totaled $112,500, according to jail records.

The investigation is ongoing, but McConkey said there are no outstanding suspects and no safety concerns to the community.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Bend Police at 541-693-6911.
