Bend PD: Man hit another over head with champagne bottle

A 33-year-old Bend man turned himself in to police and was arrested Monday on an assault charge, accused of hitting another man over the head with a champagne bottle during a fight at a New Year’s Eve party.

Officers responded at 1:15 a.m. Sunday to the reported assault at a home in the 63000 block of Vogt Road, on Bend’s north end, said Sgt. Eric Hagan.

He said Daniel Jastrab and 37-year-old Andrew Lentz got into a physical fight at Lentz’s home. During the fight, Jastrab hit Lentz over the head with a champagne bottle, resulting in serious injuries, Hagan said.

Lentz was taken by ambulance to St. Charles Bend, where he was in good condition late Monday night, according to a house supervisor.

Jastrab fled the scene after the assault and police could not find him, Hagan said.

Jastrab turned himself in to police on Monday and was taken to the Deschutes County Jail, where he was held on $50,000 bail, facing a second-degree assault charge, the sergeant said.

Alcohol was a factor in the alleged assault, Hagan added.

Lentz, who is in the St. Charles ICU, and his fiance contacted NewsChannel 21 on Tuesday and offered a different picture of what transpired at his home early Monday. They said “two drunk men” had crashed a dinner party with three couples and that Lentz wasn’t in a fight, but was attacked by Jastrab, striiking him on the head with a full bottle of champagne. The fiance said Lentz suffered a seizure waiting in the ER and was left in a coma, not responding until Monday. They also said Lentz had no measurable alcohol in his blood when tested.
