One of two Prineville stabbing victims out of hospital

One of two women allegedly stabbed by a 25-year-old Prineville man over the weekend was out of the hospital Monday, police said, while Crook County prosecutors prepared for a Tuesday court appearance for the suspect facing attempted murder, attempted rape and other charges.

Anthony James Smith was arrested early Sunday morning on two counts of attempted murder, kidnapping and other charges, accused of stabbing two women and of an attempted rape that police stopped in progress.

Officers responded at 1:37 a.m. Sunday to a 911 call from the 2000 block of Northeast Elk Street regarding a reported stabbing, said Sgt. Jimmy O’Daniel.

Arriving police found two female stabbing victims and an attempted rape in progress that police were able to stop, O’Daniel said.

The two victims were taken first to St. Charles Prineville, then flown by air ambulance to St. Charles Bend for treatment of “stab wounds to at least the face and neck area,” O’Daniel said in a news release.

Anthony James Smith of Prineville was taken to the Crook County Jail and booked on two counts each of attempted murder, first-degree assault, menacing and first-degree kidnapping, as well as one count of first-degree burglary and attempted rape. He was held on $965,000 bail and is due to be arraigned on the initial charges Tuesday afternoon, said District Attorney Daina Vitolins.

Police Sgt. Mark Monroe told NewsChannel 21 it was a home-invasion crime and the suspect was not known to either victim.

“There’s just one suspect,” Monroe said. “We’re not searching for any other suspects at this time.”

Prineville police Capt. Larry Seymour said late Monday afternoon that one of the victims had been released from St. Charles Bend.
