Girl Scout Cookie sales mark centennial

KTVZ

Girl Scout Cookie season is here, and it’s a BIG one: 2017 marks 100 years of Girl Scouts selling cookies!

A century ago, girls began participating in what would evolve into the largest entrepreneurial training program for girls in the world: the Girl Scout Cookie Program®. Girl Scouts of Oregon and Southwest Washington will commemorate this banner year with the delicious unveiling of Girl Scout S’mores™ cookies, finally available to the public beginning Friday, February 17 through Sunday, March 12.

During the last century, generations of Girl Scouts have demonstrated exemplary leadership and philanthropy by using their cookie earnings to do remarkable things within their communities.

When a customer buys Girl Scout Cookies, they are helping to power new, unique and amazing experiences for local girls–whether it’s an unforgettable trip, a service project that changes her community for the better, or an educational or outdoor experience.

Last year, one-third of all Girl Scout campers in Oregon and SW Washington used cookie program proceeds to fund their own camp experience. Thousands of girls funded local and international travel experiences, from white water rafting on the Deschutes River to building a school in Ecuador.

And nearly every Girl Scout troop uses some portion of their cookie proceeds to give back to their community, whether packaging essential items for children in foster care or purchasing pet food for a local animal shelter. Girl Scout Cookies not only brighten a customer’s day–they brighten our collective future, too.

The Girl Scout Cookie Program® plays a huge role in transforming girls into G.I.R.L.s (Go-getters, Innovators, Risk-takers, Leaders)™ as they learn the skills they need to become effective leaders, manage finances and gain confidence in handling money–skills that will stay with them forever. Each box of Girl Scout Cookies sold powers real-life experiences for thousands of local girls. 100 percent of the net revenue earned from cookie sales remains with our local council, so by purchasing cookies consumers help propel Girl Scouts’ big ideas into reality, while ensuring troops in their community thrive and grow.

The commemorative Girl Scout S’mores™ cookie will join classics like Thin Mints®, Samoas® and Trefoils® to complete a set of eight delicious Girl Scout cookie varieties. Cookies can be purchased from Girl Scout Cookie booths February 17 – March 12 for $5 per box. Girl Scout S’mores™ cookies and gluten free Toffee-tastic™ are available set select booths while supplies last. Customers can find a booth nearby with the Cookie Locator at girlscoutsosw.org or use the Cookie Locator app available for iPhone or Android.

The iconic Girl Scout Cookie Program only runs from February 17 through March 12, so act fast before they’re gone! Find your cookies today or learn more at girlscoutsosw.org/cookies.
