Firefighters train in icy waters in Redmond

KTVZ

Redmond firefighters got hands-on training at a frozen pond at the Greens at Redmond golf course on Friday.

Firefighters were taking advantage of the winter season, as freezing temperatures have created icy rivers and ponds.

This real-life scenario brought out firefighters and medics as the emergency crews were taking what they’ve learned and and putting it to use.

“Ice rescues are very rare. It’s actually getting our equipment going through the motions of doing what we would be doing, if a victim had to be rescued,” said Redmond firefighter Jake Campbell.

Campbell said every second counts, when it comes to getting the victim out of the freezing water and getting the person warmed up.

So, on Friday they prepared for a rescue that could save someone’s life.

Redmond Fire and Rescue said they haven’t been called out so far to rescue someone from icy waters this winter.
