Redmond home garage fire causes $50K damage

A fire broke out in the garage of a two-story northwest Redmond home Friday morning, but five family members home at the time were able to escape unhurt, officials said.

Redmond Fire & Rescue crews were called at 9:15 a.m. to the home in the 700 block of Northwest 28 th Loop. The initial report was that all residents had evacuated.

Fire Marshal Traci Cooper said the family’s dog apparently was barking, prompting them to look outside and spot the smoke, around the same time a neighbor pounded on the door to alert them to the fire.

Smoke alarms did activate, once the smoke entered the home, she said.

Firefighters quickly put out the garage fire before it burned into the living area, but that area did sustain heavy smoke damage, Cooper said.

Damage to the home was estimated at $50,000, and two cars parked in front of the garage also were heavily damaged, Cooper said. The cause of the fire has not been determined.

American Red Cross disaster responders were called in to help the seven people affected, including five adults and two children, as well as two pets. They provided resources to help address the residents’ immediate basic needs, such as temporary housing, food, clothing and “comfort kits” with toiletry items.
