Police ID Eugene teen killed in beach log accident
(Update: Name released of victim)
BANDON, Ore. (AP) – Police have released the name of a Eugene teen who died after a waterlogged log rolled on top of her at a coastal beach.
The Eugene Register-Guard reports (http://bit.ly/2nnbCyg ) that 14-year-old Aurora Sheffel was standing on top of the log with friends at the South Jetty Park Beach in Bandon on Saturday afternoon. Shaffel was the last one standing on the log when it shifted in the surf and rolled.
Shaffel was the daughter of Cora and David Wederquist of Eugene. Her parents say the straight-A student was at the beach celebrating spring break and her recent selection for North Eugene High School’s cheerleading team.
Shaffel’s relatives have set up a GoFundMe page for funeral expenses.
Eugene School District spokeswoman says the high school will provide support for the students when they return to class.
Police say other beachgoers got the girl out from under the log after several attempts. A responding Bandon police officer administered life-saving measures, as did paramedics.
But the girl was pronounced dead at South Coos Hospital.
The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department warns that the ocean can move even the largest logs, and even those that look small can be waterlogged and weigh tons.
To play it safe, the agency says: If you see a log in the surf or on wet sand, stay off it.
