Overturf Butte beetle-infested trees set for removal

The City of Bend Utility Department is partnering with the Bend Park and Recreation District, OSU Extension Office and Oregon Department of Forestry to remove bark beetle-infested trees and fire fuels from Overturf Butte, beginning Monday, April 3 . The targeted completion date of the tree removal is Friday April 7 .

During the tree removal process, Overturf Butte trails will be closed, including:

— Cascade Highlands Trail East of Skyliner Summit Loop

— Connector trail from the Overturf neighborhood park on NW 17 th Street

— Connector trail from NW Flagline Drive

The Overturf Butte Reservoir dog off-leash area will also be closed. Overturf Neighborhood Park on NW 17 th Street will only be closed when tree removal is being conducted in the immediate area.

The closures are for the safety of bikers, hikers, kids, dogs and work crews. Posted signs will notify park and trail visitors of the closures. Partnering agencies ask for the public’s support in avoiding the closed areas until the tree removal project is complete.

This week-long project to remove bark beetle-infested trees and reduce fire fuels supports a healthier forest, improves wildlife habitat, and reduces the risk of high severity wildfires in a residential neighborhood.
