Knopp wants to require that ballot measures include funding
The Oregon Senate Rules Committee held a hearing Wednesday on a measure sponsored by Rep. Tim Knopp, R-Bend, to amend the state Constitution to help protect voter intent on state ballot proposals, by requiring that an adequate revenue source be identified.
Senate Joint Resolution 46 ensures ballot proposals include a source of revenue sufficient to fund the proposal if enacted.
“Profligate, unpaid-for spending crowds out other spending for the most critical services for the people we love, our seniors, our veterans, our kids,” Knopp said in a statement.
“We must secure more funding for items all Oregonians agree on that we want and that we need, such as schools, roads, law enforcement and health care,” he continued. “Oregonians have loudly told us, repeatedly, that they want to see government reign in out-of-control, unconscionable overspending.
“We can pass this bill to make sure we don’t perpetuate the cycle of busted budgets and political fights so we can protect voter intent on ballot proposals,” Knopp concluded.
