Crook County conducting drought-impact survey

KTVZ

The Crook County Public Health Department is conducting a community-wide random survey this week on Tuesday and Wednesday.

CASPER is a Community Assessment for Public Health Emergency Response and Crook County Public Health is partnering with the Oregon Health Authority and the Centers for Disease Control to conduct a random countywide survey around the drought we have experienced over the past several years and what the impact has been on our county in regards to personal impact, economic impact and agricultural / commercial impact.

Crook County will be conducting only the third CASPER ever done in Oregon. The week will be a mix of volunteers doing door to door random surveys along with analysis of the gathered information and then ending with a community partners meeting to receive a report on the findings of the survey.

Volunteers may be in your area on Tuesday and Wednesday asking if you are interested in taking part in this survey. You will not be asked personal questions and your address will remain confidential. You are not required to participate, however the information we gather can help us support our community so much better. Although we may not be in a drought at the current time, we never get advance notice of when it might happen next. The report will enable us to understand the health related risks around drought as well as from an emergency preparedness perspective how we can better help our county prepare for any emergency or disaster.

During the field work volunteers will be visiting randomly selected areas throughout the entire county including the outlying areas of Powell Butte and Paulina. With the support of our County Emergency Manager we have determined that the areas selected are all safe for our volunteers to visit. Addresses in each section have also been randomly selected for the survey. Volunteers will be in teams of two with instructions to cover only the addresses already pre-selected.

The headquarters for this project will be at the Crook County Library. Anyone from our community is welcome to stop by if you have questions or would like to understand this project better.

This information is going to be used by both the Health Department Emergency Preparedness and the County Emergency Manager to better understand the impacts the drought has caused and how to better serve our community going forward. It will inform us on challenges surrounding ground water, livestock, clean drinking water, hardships on our community members, recreation, health, etc.

At all times please do not hesitate to contact us with questions or the need for more information.
