Rep, Gene Whisnant (R-Sunriver) was recognized Tuesday by OregonASK as a “Champion for Children in Poverty” during the organization’s “Day at the Capitol.” Rep. Whisnant received this award for his years of advocacy on behalf of legislation that will provide students in poverty with greater opportunities to participate in afterschool programs and to succeed in their K-12 educations. “I have repeatedly advocated for scholarships that would enable children in poverty to participate in more afterschool and special education activities,” said Rep. Whisnant. “In addition, I am proud of the bills I have introduced both in the past and during the current legislative session that will help us to identify and better understand ways in which our education system can assist students from disadvantaged backgrounds.” Rep. Whisnant went on to praise OregonASK for their leadership in ensuring that our schools are providing high quality afterschool programs to students, including opportunities for children in poverty to participate in those programs. Research has shown that some students learn more outside of the classroom than they do in school. Touring museums, hiking through forests, and attending summer camps are just a few examples of expanded learning opportunities that can improve students’ attendance, behavior, and core academics. OregonASK works to ensure that all children have access to these opportunities. Founded in 2005, OregonASK’s mission is to support, expand, and advocate for quality out-of-school time programs and activities for children, youth, and families throughout Oregon. As a result of their advocacy and other organizations’ efforts, Oregon has risen to be a Top Ten State in Afterschool, as determined by the Afterschool Alliance.
