UO gets approval of 10.6 percent tuition hike

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – On its second try, the University of Oregon has received approval for a double-digit tuition increase for in-state students for 2017-18.

The Register-Guard reports (https://goo.gl/oDwG0Z ) that in a reversal of a decision from earlier this month, the Higher Education Coordinating Commission voted 7-1 Thursday to approve a 10.6 percent resident tuition increase at the university.

The university had requested that the commission reconsider its previous rejection of the tuition hike proposal, warning of more budget cuts without more money from students.

Since 2013, Oregon law has required commission approval for any increase of more than 5 percent to in-state tuition at Oregon’s public universities.

A couple of the commissioners who voted against the increase earlier this month, including Commissioner Larry Roper, said they changed their vote because of what students stood to lose with budget cuts.
