DCSO advice: Don’t let thieves ruin your day outdoors

The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office issued a seasonal warning Saturday to residents and visitors alike who hit the water, trails, parks and other summer outdoor fun spots — make sure your gear and valuables are locked out of sight or otherwise secured.

“As summer is approaching, our public lands and recreational areas are receiving heavy use,” sheriff’s Sgt. Nathan Garibay, the county’s emergency services manager, said in a brief news release.

“Each year, your sheriff’s office sees an increase in thefts from campgrounds,” Garibay said.

“Thieves target items left unsecured at campgrounds, in vehicles, boats or at day use areas. Common items that are stolen include fishing poles and tackle, small generators, tools, camping supplies, and other personal items left unsecured.”

Garibay urged, “Please secure your personal property to make it more difficult to steal.”

Also, he said, please report suspicious activities or persons by calling Deschutes County non-emergency dispatch at 541-693-6911 .

“If you catch someone committing theft, be a good witness,” Garibay wrote. “A good description of the suspect or suspects, their vehicle with license plate, and a direction of travel greatly increase the odds they will be apprehended.”
