Nude Prineville man arrested in wild street assault

A nude man believed to be on drugs who stepped in front of a car in southeast Prineville, got in and assaulted the female driver while her 15-year-old sister fled was arrested late Sunday night, police said — but not before he tried to take the car, tried to run when police arrived, then charged an officer and got in the patrol car, continuing to fight with officers.

Prineville police and Crook County sheriff’s deputies responded shortly after 11 p.m. to Southeast Fairview Street near East First Street on an assault reported by a 15-year-old Prineville girl who had been a passenger in a car, said Sgt. Troy Wiles.

She said a nude man blocked the car by standing in the street, forcing the driver, her 23-year-old sister, to stop, Wiles said.

The teen was able to run from the car after the unknown man, later identified as Joseph Adam Bailey, 20, of Prineville, got in without permission and began assaulting both occupants, trying to take the car, the sergeant said.

Bailey ran as officers arrived, but they were able to catch the man, who then charged an officer, Wiles said. A Taser was deployed, but was not effective in controlling Bailey, who forced his way past the officer and got in the patrol car by the driver’s side door, Wiles said.

Bailey had to be pulled from the driver’s seat of the patrol car and continued to fight with officers while being taken into custody, according to Wiles.

The driver was taken by ambulance to St. Charles Prineville with non-life-threatening injuries and later released, Wiles said. Her younger sister was not injured and was released to her parents.

Bailey also was taken by ambulance to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and later released to police, to be taken to the Crook County Jail, where he was booked on two counts each of third-degree robbery, unauthorized entry to a motor vehicle and attempted unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, and single counts of fourth-degree assault, resisting arrest, strangulation, reckless endangering and interfering with a police officer. His bail totaled $77,000 pending an initial court appearance, according to online jail records.

“Controlled substances are thought to be a factor in this case,” Wiles wrote in a news release.
