City of Bend sending out backlflow testers
Bend residents may soon see backflow testers in their neighborhoods accessing water meter boxes. The City of Bend has contracted with Olson LLC to test city-owned backflow assemblies in residential water meter boxes. Annual testing is required by the Oregon Administrative Rules and the City of Bend Code.
Underground landscape sprinklers also require a backflow assembly which must be tested annually by a backflow tester who is independently hired by the homeowner. Those who are renting should contact their landlords or property management to assure their home is compliant and safe.
“Our goal is to keep our water safe and to maintain water quality,” says Safe Drinking Water Coordinator Donald “DJ” Buhmann. “Without a backflow assembly or a properly functioning backflow assembly, contaminates can enter the pipes and into the household water and the city’s water.
“It is not only essential for good health, but it is an Oregon rule and a city code that these specific assemblies are on our water pipes to help prevent contamination.”
City water customers can expect to see Olson LLC working in city water meter boxes throughout the summer and fall.
