Bend set to repave Bond, Wall streets downtown

KTVZ

Roads in downtown Bend are due for maintenance, and the city is about to begin repaving Wall and Bond streets.

Crews will work at night from 7:30 p.m. to 9 a.m. starting Wednesday, July 5 , and Thursday, July 6 . Construction will begin on Bond Street just south of Greenwood Avenue and progress north to Wall Street. The route will turn south on Wall Street toward the downtown core.

“Night work will be less disruptive than day work for businesses and people who visit downtown,” said Streets Supervisor Paul Neiswonger. The project includes grinding out old pavement, repaving and then striping the roads.

Construction will pause during the Bank of the Cascades Bend Summer Festival on Friday, July 7 , and Saturday, July 8 , and will resume on the evening of Sunday, July 9 as the Summer Festival concludes.

On the nights of July 9 and 10, work will continue where it stopped on Wall Street and move southward to Idaho Avenue. On the nights of July 11 and 12, crews will circle back northward on Bond Street.

Detours will be marked during construction. The city asks drivers to follow designated detour routes and use caution in the downtown area to protect the safety of construction workers and pedestrians in the area. Sidewalks will be open when adjacent vehicle lanes are under construction.

Roads will be open during the daytime hours.

Parking will be restricted after 6:30 p.m. in areas where work is planned. Drivers should read and obey signs describing nighttime parking restrictions. This will be an ideal time to use the parking garage located on Lava Road between Oregon and Minnesota avenues.

If the city has to relocate cars that are not moved according to parking restrictions, drivers can retrieve their towed vehicles at the Troy Field parking lot.

“We understand there is no convenient time to perform road maintenance and prohibit parking downtown, but paving in the summer is necessary and working at night is an attempt to minimize the inconveniences,” said Neiswonger. “We are working around a busy summer schedule of festivals and events and getting the work done between major events.”

The city said it will finish road work downtown before the Cascade Cycling Classic starts on July 19 .
