Oakridge man killed in Highway 58 head-on crash
One Oakridge man was killed and another seriously injured in a head-on crash Saturday morning on state Highway 58 west of Oakridge, Oregon State Police reported.
OSP and emergency personnel from Oakridge and Dexter responded around 7:40 a.m. to the crash on Highway 58 near milepost 29, about six miles west of Oakridge, said OSP Sgt. Yvette Shephard.
An initial investigation found that a gold 1999 Lexus sedan driven by Joseph Allan Boerste, 45, was heading east on the highway and crossed into the oncoming lane while navigating a wide right-hand corner, Shephard said.
The car collided head-on with a green 2001 Honda CRV driven by Richard Linn Montgomery, 65, the sergeant said.
Montgomery suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene after medics performed measures to try to save his life. Boerste suffered serious injuries and was taken by ambulance to PeaceHealth Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend in Springfield.
OSP troopers from the Springfield Area Command and the Lane County District Attorney’s Office are investigating the crash. OSP is seeking witnesses and asking anyone with addition information to contact Trooper Strubel from the Springfield Patrol Office at 541-726-2536.
The crash and investigation closed Highway 58 for about 2 ½ hours.
OSP was assisted by the Dexter and Oakridge fire departments, Oakridge police and ODOT.
