Candle in La Pine converted shed sparks fire; dog dies
A candle in a La Pine shed converted into a living space sparked a fire late Sunday night that spread to a nearby home, and while five residents were able to escape unhurt, a search turned up a pet dog who later died, fire officials said.
La Pine Rural Fire Protection District crews were called around 10:50 p.m. to the 16000 block of Leona Lane and arrived to find the 12-by-30 shed fully involved and a 40-by-30 single-story home a few feet away 50 percent involved, said Fire Chief Mike Supkis.
Another detached garage converted into a living space was 12 feet away, along with a separate barn.
Firefighters were able to stop the fire’s progress in the home, contain the shed fire and protect the other threatened structures, as well as prevent any wild land fire spread, Supkis said.
Two engines, two water tenders, a medic unit and four command and support units responded, totaling 18 firefighters and support personnel.
During a search of the structures by firefighters, a dog was found in the home and rescued, given care and oxygen, the fire chief said. But the dog later succumbed to smoke inhalation after being taken to a veterinary clinic.
The five residents told fire officials the fire was started by a candle in the shed and they were able to escape after discovering it.
Firefighters worked the fire for about two hours to bring it under control and mop up, Supkis said. They returned early Monday morning to check on any potential holdover spots.
American Red Cross disaster responders were called in to help the four adults and one child affected by the fire, They provided help for the victims’ immediate basic needs, such as temporary housing, food and clothing.
