Three hurt, 1 seriously, in Highway 97 crash north of Bend

Three people were injured, one seriously, in a three-vehicle crash Monday on Highway 97 six miles north of Bend, Oregon State Police reported.

Troopers, police and fire medics responded to the crash at Highway 97 and Gift Road shortly after noon, said OSP Sgt. Michael Berland.

A preliminary investigation found that David Nixon, 80, of Redmond, at the wheel of a 2006 Hyundai Santa Fe, turned to head north on Highway 97 from Gift Road and pulled into the path of a southbound 2014 Infiniti Q50 driven by Sondra Vaughn, 67, also from Redmond, Berland said.

After the Infiniti collided with the the Hyundai, it crossed into the oncoming, northbound lanes and struck a 1990 International dump truck driven by Timothy Duggan, 55, of Bend, the sergeant said.

Vaughn, who was seriously injured, was flown by AirLink helicopter to St. Charles Bend, troopers said. Nixon and his female passenger, Bonnie Nixon, were taken by ambulance to St. Charles Redmond with minor injuries.

OSP was assisted at the scene by Deschutes County sheriff’s deputies, Redmond Fire and ODOT.
